mother and child

  1. This is a great painting because it breaks away from the tradition of a formal family painting. I see anxiety, fear, determination and comfort, a mother's basic and unrivaled instinct to protect her child. The child is not smiling but looks worried. Yet the child also looks comforted as if she is aware that she is protected. The background is dark and it is a serious moment. Anyway these are just my thoughts and impressions.
I wrote this short poem after looking at your painting.

With arms of mountains i embrace you
And you breathe my rivers, valleys and flowers,
    Cold, monolith fingers reach out
To cradle you like i do
    But fail.

    1. Joshua....as you said Mother and Child is a universal theme and anyone can relate to it, thank you for putting in your thoughts and I'm very honoured that you wrote a poem for this painting, the ending of the poem is a little sad though...

    2. Thanks. i just want to clarify on the 'sadness' of the poem. I did not mean it to be sad rather i wanted to celebrate the timelessness of a mothers love which is more enduring than one's culture or tradition. i wanted to show how culture, tradition and society cannot provide the same care, love and bond that is created by the love of a mother for her child. While the mothers arms are powerful and protective like the mountains yet the mother also cares, inspires and nurtures her young ones like the rivers, valleys and flowers. On the other hand the monoliths as a readily adopted symbol/icon of culture and tradition can and do take on the role of the 'motherland' but they are cold and lifeless and ultimately fail to do what the mother has done.

Anyway have some more thoughts/questions on your philosophy of painting which i would like to discuss/learn more about later. Great work.
